The national leadership of the
ruling party, APC has condemned the violence and confusion that broke out at
the presidential rally in Ogun state on Monday, February 11 - The party vowed
to punish Governor Ibikunle Amosun for allegedly sponsoring thugs to throw
objects at President Muhammadu Buhari and other members of the party
leadership.
The party added that it will take a
decision on the right disciplinary measure that will be meted to the governor
after the forthcoming general elections. The party alleged that Governor
Ibikunle Amosun was responsible for sponsoring thugs to throw objects at
President Muhammadu Buhari and other party chieftains at its campaign rally in
Abeokuta, Ogun state yesterday.
According to a statement made
available to newsmen, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, APC's spokesman, stated that the
state governor will be punished after the general elections.
Contrary to President Buhari's
position, the ruling party asked its supporters in the state to vote for its governorship
candidate, Prince Dapo Abiodun during the governorship poll on Saturday, March 2.
The statement reads, "The All
Progressives Congress (APC) regrets Monday's premeditated attacks sponsored by
Governor Ibikunle Amosun on President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior party
leaders at the venue of the presidential campaign rally in Ogun state.
"This is one act of indiscipline too many. The APC will not condone acts
of indiscipline, indiscretion and anti-party activities from any party member
no matter how highly placed.
"The party
will review this gross misconduct of deliberately positioning thugs to attack
and embarrass the President and the party's leadership. The party will take a
decision on this matter immediately after the elections. "It must be
stated that party supremacy and discipline according to our constitution are
not matters of choice but binding principles which must be adhered to by ALL
party members''.
"The APC is a party known for
discipline, justice, fairness and equality hence any plan to destroy what this
party stands for would be rejected. No single person will be allowed to put his
personal and selfish interests ahead of the wishes of the people of Ogun state
and elsewhere. "Post primaries, the decision of the National Working
Committee to uphold the wishes of party members is unbendable. Therefore,
whatever means being presently deployed by persons intending to undermine the
wishes of the people for personal gains will not be tolerated'', the statement
added
In canvassing for its governorship
candidate in the state, the statement said, "We urge our teeming party
supporters and members not to be disturbed by Monday's condemnable incident. We
urge all to continue trooping out enmasse for our remaining campaigns and vote
massively for ALL and ONLY APC candidates in the forthcoming general
elections."
Violence broke out at the presidential
campaign rally of the ruling APC in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Monday, 11th
February, 2019.
The atmosphere became charged when the
Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, came on stage to campaign for the APC and
the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), a party he is supporting against the APC.
Response from a former governor of
Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, asking the people to vote for only the candidates
of the APC in the state threw the entire place into disarray as supporters of
the governors threw stones and pure water sachet at the President Muhammed Buhari
and the party’s chairman, Adams Oshiomole.
The campaign came to an abrupt end
as violence broke in the stadium as the President was presenting the party’s
candidate, Dapo Abiodun to the party members.
