The
Bright Approach Club of Sagamu is a non-governmental body with Sagamu indigenes
as members and is peopled by accomplished Sagamu sons at home and in Diaspora
who have taken it upon themselves to give back to the community, through the
promotion of academic excellence among secondary school students.
The
5-member club has the passion to curb some of the social ills tearing our
society apart. It is a non-partisan and
non- religious association poised with the passion to promote excellence and
change the current narratives among the upcoming generation, especially in
Sagamu.
In a
chat with Remo Times Magazine, Wing
Commander Olusola M. Alegi, who spoke on behalf of the group disclosed that, ‘we
intend to achieve through motivation of excellence by giving awards to pupils
who have distinguished themselves in academics and legal crafts’.
‘We
noticed over time that our reward system of motivating students to committing
themselves to studying or learning crafts with a view to achieving excellence
has reached its lowest ebb. Other vices such as social media, cyber fraud and
criminal activities yahoo seems to have taken over their consciousness and
there is nothing to spur school pupils to strive for academic/craft excellence
hence, the members came together to develop a reward system’, he said.
‘It is
in the light of these social ills that these Sagamu indigenes thought it
wise to re-awaken the social consciousness of secondary schools pupils that
hardwork pays. An attempt by the members
to impact the city where they had their childhood for good’, he added.
Over
350 secondary school students registered for the test, however only 316 participants
took the well-organised and highly competitive aptitude test. Registration was driven
through technology for participants, with registration restricted to only
pupils schooling in secondary schools in Sagamu. Participants were later directed
to appear in their school uniforms.
To
further strengthen the credibility and integrity of the exercise, participants
were issued a code number as soon as they register and at the end of the
exercise, scripts were marked by volunteer teachers and then the exam numbers
are traced back on the registration list to identify the identity of the
candidates.
Meanwhile,
because the organizers only provided cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place positions, a
respected Monarch, the Elepe of Epe, Oba Adewale Oshiberu awarded a N10,000.00
